Ooh, Hot!

(Joe here) We are still in Terlingua, TX. Today we went to the Hot Springs in Big Bend National Park. On our way to the springs, we found petroglyphs (paintings) and pictographs (carvings) in the rock face. When we got to it, we found that it was very hot. (I was cooked instantly). You can literally reach over and play in the Rio Grande (even though it's extremely COLD!). A Mexican on the other bank of the river (the Mexican side) tried to get our attention by producing a donkey. It was evident that he was trying to sell something to us. We ignored him because people told us that they get in trouble if they come across the river.
After boiling in the springs awhile, we left and started a hike. The hike was 1.4 miles so going in and out is 2.8 miles. Whew! That was the longest 2.8 miles I've seen! But it was worth it. We saw some illegal immigrants selling things like brass scorpions and walking sticks and some crystals, like amethyst and quartz. We didn't buy anything, though because the signs warned us not to do that.

Can't wait to travel to Texas later this month. We are in Albuquerque, NM -- with snow on the ground. The other night it got down to 6 degrees. Being too hot is sounding very attractive!

Love the idea of hot springs ... but without the heat : )

It's beautiful here. We went to Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge & hiked 5 miles. Saw lots of gators ... many BIG fellas.

Figured that we might as well try & keep up with you & do some exploring of our own : )

When we were there one of the Mexican locals picked us up by row boat and took us to their side of the river. We paid him $5 and spent the afternoon walking around their dirt village, visiting their little museum and eating an authentic mexican lunch. It was great! We weren't warned of staying away from them, it seemed a common thing to do. I wish we would have known about the hot springs! Sounds lilke you had a lot of fun...lucky boys!
